A step-by-step guide for those with employees in California.
URGENT: California's Workplace Violence Prevention Law goes into effect on July 1, 2024.
Through this legislation, the state of California is requiring all employers in the state to meet the complex standards by July 1st, 2024.
We wish we could report to you a simple solution or a turn-key fix. In this case, the easy fix does not exist. Implementation and compliance will be achieved through a process of creating a committee, a learning process and a reporting/communication function.
This process must be driven by the company, from within. There are no ‘off-the-shelf’ products or software systems that can solve this challenge.
We have taken steps to assist you in this challenge.
You will be responsible for establishing, implementing, and training an effective written workplace violence prevention plan. The outcome of the WVPP will be similar to the establishment of an internally driven, management and employee guided safety committee, with an education component.
This road map will help you customize your program to meet the regulatory demands. The overall structure will include a written WVPP plan, and active workplace committee made of company employees and written training concepts.
Your training must include the following:
- How to involve employees in the process and communicate with ‘representatives’ of the committee,
- How employees will report possible issues of violence, giving them instruction on exactly who they must report to,
- Communication of methods to identify possible workplace hazards (including the four types of workplace violence),
- How to obtain a copy of the written WVPP,
- How to report witnessed incidents, and
- Instruction on how to avoid physical danger or aggressive responses.
